British Credit Union Historical Society

Ballycastle Credit Union Ltd

Ballycastle Credit Union has been serving the local community since 1965 when 15 founding members each paid membership fee of half a crown giving a total of £16-17s-6p and £1 into savings. at a meeting held in the Hall of The Star of The Star School (now Sheskburn House) Ballycastle Credit Union was born. The first president elected was Frank McCaughan, Cahal Dallat was Secretary, Joe O’Rourke and James O’Kane joint Treasurers. However, problems abounded; they needed somewhere to operate from and no-one had any experience of lending money. What terms would be imposed, how much interest to charge? The very first loan was to a farmer for the purpose of buying a sow. The loan was repaid and the farmer came back and borrowed again. It was 1970 the Board of Directors decided to purchase the premises at 1 The Diamond, Ballycastle for the sum of 2000

Residents who were running a savings club in Cushendall agreed to merge and the common bond was changed to accommodate the credit union. Celebrating their 10th birthday in 1975 the membership had grown to over 1000 and loans granted amounted to £300K. 2005 the Credit Union celebrated 40 years of serving the community. Over time the common bond extended throughout the Moyle area stretching from Bushmills to Garron Point, including Armoy, Ballintoy and the surrounding communities. Members can visit the offices in Ballycastle, Cushendall and Bushmills. Where members matter most.
