Scotwest Credit Union Ltd

Scotwest Credit Union began life in 1991 as Strathclyde Regional Council Employees Credit Union Ltd, meeting weekly in Strathclyde House in Glasgow city centre, managing savings for staff from the council and from Strathclyde Fire Brigade and Strathclyde Water Board.  In 1995 the credit union moved to offices only a stone’s throw away from the location of those initial meetings. 1996 Scotwest becomes the credit union for 12 local authorities. 1999 the website goes live. 2001 the credit union celebrates ten years of serving members and reaches 1500 members. In 2004 refurbishment of the Elmbank Street offices and mortgages are introduced in the following year.

The common bond is extended to include anyone living or working in the west of Scotland, 20,000 memberships are achieved in 2008 and leads to the introduction of junior accounts. Launched in December 2010, the Making A Difference Grant allows members to apply for grants of up to £250, to help local community events, groups, projects, associations and activities. Also in 2010 Scotwest, was one of the first amongst UK credit unions to sign for TCS Financial Solutions for its Bancs core banking system. Bancs replaced the legacy Curtains system from domestic vendor Kesho Systems. In 2011memberships are at 25,000 and in 2013 the AGM is streamed on line for the first time. Car loans made available to members who can afford them and the Scotwest mobile app is up and running in 2015. There are already 30,000 members as the credit union celebrates 25 years in February 2016.
